WeChat Eating Tens of GB? Move Its Storage to Another Drive

WeChat is the most common invisible giant on C: (10-30GB is typical). The fix is moving its storage path to a roomier drive — WeChat migrates all historical files automatically and no chat history is lost.

  1. Open WeChat → menu (bottom-left) → Settings → File Management
  2. Click Change, pick a folder on another drive (e.g. D:\WeChatFiles), confirm — WeChat migrates existing files automatically (tens of GB takes minutes; keep WeChat open)
  3. When migration finishes, click Clean Up Space on the same page to purge expired image/video caches
  4. Upgraded from WeChat 3.x to 4.x? The old "WeChat Files" folder may remain at the original location — once the new version works fine, that old folder can be archived or deleted
  5. WeCom (WeChat Work) has the same option: Settings → File Management

FAQ

Will moving WeChat storage lose my chat history?

No. The official migration moves the message database and all files completely — just don't force-quit WeChat while it runs.

Does "Clean Up Space" delete chat messages?

No. It clears caches and the expired media files you select — it shows you the details for confirmation before deleting.
